Kruger Park Lodges in South Africa

Savanna Private Game Reserve

Savanna luxury tented lodge - patio at night

Savanna General
An exclusive 5 star lodge, Savanna is situated in the internationally famous Sabi Sand Reserve within the greater Kruger National Park conservancy.
Savanna lies in an area where 'Big 5' sightings are so frequent, it is not unusual to see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino in a single game drive.  Specially designed game viewing vehicles and highly trained guides with vast knowledge of the African bushveld, take guests on close and intimate encounters with a large variety of wildlife. Numerous nearby dams and a series of waterholes in front of the lodge attract many species, especially in the dry winter months when elephants are daily visitors.
A close-knit team of friendly staff provides personalised service with each guest regarded as a valued friend. From the moment they arrive guests feel part of the Savanna 'family'.
Nine magnificent suites offer spacious and luxurious accommodation. Seven of the suites have tented roofs, blending the elegance of a by-gone colonial era with all the convenience of modern facilities.
Savanna Tented Lodge - Patio view
Savanna Private Game Lodge is situated in the Western sector of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, within the southern quarter of the greater Kruger National Park conservation area.
The beautifully appointed suites nestle amongst indigenous bush and trees that provide privacy, quiet and a haven for birds. The epitome of elegance and comfort, the décor is a blend of colonial and classic with hand crafted furniture, fine linen and beautiful artwork. Three Executive and four Luxury Suites offer a unique 'Out of Africa' experience with canvas roofs above draped ceilings set on permanent structures. All have magnificent bathrooms and decks looking onto waterholes in the bush. In addition, the larger Executive Suites have plunge pools.
The thatched Savanna Suite is tailor-made for families, with two en-suite bedrooms on either side of a spacious, elegant lounge and large covered patio. The bedroom suites with their individual bathrooms, can also be booked separately, in which case they would not include the lounge, private vehicle and guides which are part of the Savanna Suite package.

Main Lodge
Relaxing in the comfort of the public lounge with its spacious patio, or at the main pool looking out over lush gardens and floodlit waterhole, guests are frequently treated to fantastic views of birds and game drinking and bathing, A barman is constantly in attendance to ensure the humans' thirst is just as adequately taken care of.  A viewing loft above the lounge makes a pleasant nook for a quiet game of chess as well as a bird's eye view of the waterhole, while an adjoining library provides wireless broadband internet access and offers guests the means to transfer digital photographs, freshly captured on their safari, onto CD or DVD.

Food & Wine
Gourmet dining is an essential component of the Savanna safari experience. Breakfasts provide full English fare plus fresh fruits, yogurts, pastries, home-made mueslis and Savanna's famous 'smoothies'. An innovative lunch buffet offers a large variety of salads, hot meat and vegetable dishes and cheeses, as well as a kiddies' menu for youngsters who prefer simpler meals.
Candle-lit dinners, with traditional local dishes adding spice to the best international fare, are served on the deck of the main lodge. On balmy nights, sumptuous barbecues are enjoyed under the stars round a blazing fire in an open-air 'boma' or in a candle-lit clearing in the bush. Guests are often treated to the stirring voices of a local choir who entertain during dinner. Cuisine is of the highest standard, with much emphasis on quality and presentation, complemented by award winning wines, imported and local, from Savanna's well-stocked wine cellar.

Game Drives
Land Rovers have been specially modified for guests' comfort and safety with bucket seats seperated by large storage boxes. In order to maximise photographic opportunities, there are never more than two people in a row unless guests request otherwise. The vehicles are set up to seat seven but can easily be adapted to seat 10 guests if required. In addition, there are never more than two vehicles at a sighting, except with very relaxed animals in open terrain, in which case three vehicles are allowed. The afternoon game drive includes a stop for sundowners while marvelling at the splendour of an African sunset, and the absolute tranquility of the bush. On the morning drive there is a tea/coffee stop with the famous Savanna Amarula hot chocolate or coffee a highly recommended alternative for the more adventurous at heart.

Game Walks
Optional game walks are offered to guests who would like to experience the fauna and flora on foot. Led by an armed ranger and tracker, they provide fascinating insight into the geology and botany of the area. Trackers who have grown up in local villages impart a wealth of information on the uses of bushveld trees and plants in tribal customs and rituals, as well as their herbal and medicinal properties and practical applications. A peeled twig from one tree, for instance, makes a good toothbrush while the silky leaves of another provide the softest toilet paper.
Walks generally take place in the area around Savanna Lodge in between game drives and meals but if guests prefer, a longer walk can replace a drive or be incorporated as part of a drive. The thrill of quietly approaching game while on foot, of close encounters with the smaller creatures and the myriads of wild flowers and beautiful butterflies they attract in summer, brings an added dimension to the magic of an African safari.
Relaxation between game drives is important and what better way to unwind than with an invigorating massage. Savanna's own qualified therapist  offers guests a range of treatments in the privacy of their suites. And, if a little retail therapy is called for, a visit to the curio and gift shop should do the trick.
Savanna offers excursions to nearby places of interest and scenic beauty including the spectacular Panorama route and an African village. Here guests visit the school and a traditional healer or medicine man and learn about Shangaan culture and food. On a visit to an elephant sanctuary guests feed and ride the gentle giants. Golf can be arranged at Skukuza or the magnificent Leopard Creek course. These activities, with the exception of golf at Leopard Creek, take place between game drives so no meals or drives are missed. (Prices are available on request)
Community Development
As part of an ongoing outreach programme, Savanna has targeted two schools in the Gazankulu area as beneficiaries for donation and funding. Guests at Savanna are offered a tour of a Shangaan village and an authentic view of the local lifestyle. Mr Zamani Mathabula, organiser of these tours, gives the guests a traditional experience of local village life. The tour includes visits to the traditional healer, the Chief, the Chivakani Preschool and the Ian Mackenzie High School. Guests are also encouraged to taste local fare. Savanna donates a portion of the tour price to assist the two schools with equipment and general upkeep.
In addition, the shareholders of Savanna have allocated an annual share of profits to the community. These funds go towards local schools, staff housing and other areas of need in the local village. Guests are welcome to contribute to the fund which is managed by Savanna

Travel documents
Travel documents, such as passports and visas to enter the country, are the responsibility of the individual guest.
Important: South Africa immigration requirements
South Africa passport control has become very strict, to the point of deporting a number of guests due to their passports not complying with requirements. Passports MUST be valid for at least six months from the guest’s return date. We recommend a validity of nine months to prevent any problems in this regard. There must be at least three blank visa pages in the passport (not endorsement pages). Guests have been refused entry due to not having sufficient visa pages in their passports.
Non-smoking policy
In the interest of health and safety, Savanna observes a strict non-smoking policy. Smoking is not allowed in the suites or on game drives. It is only permitted in designated smoking areas in the lodge, and during drinks breaks on game drives.
Arrival / departure
Guests may arrive any time from noon, and the rooms are to be vacated by 11h00. Please note that the game drive departs at 16h00 in summer and at 15h30 in winter.
An on site emergency medical service is available which includes evacuation to a private hospital in Nelspruit if necessary.
Since malaria is present in the Mpumalanga region where Savanna is situated, it is essential to ensure that anti-malaria precautions be taken throughout the year. Please consult your doctor or pharmacist. Further information can be obtained from the Kruger National Park Malaria Hotline on +27 (0) 822341800.
